TMJ/TMD Jaw Treatment
Dr. Zabek is very experienced in the treatment of jaw disorders, more commonly known as TMJ. He has studied and treated occlusion (the study and handling of tooth alignment and problems associated with proper bites) and joint disorders since the early 1990’s. An occlusion assessment is a routine part of every standard exam that he does, because Dr. Zabek considers proper alignment to be an integral part of quality dental care.
The term "TMJ" is the acronym for "TemperoMandibular Joint". This is the ball and socket joint that allows the lower jaw to open, close and move sideways when chewing and speaking. Everyone has two of them, and they are located about one centimeter in front of the ears.
What is TMJ disorder?
Temporomandibular Joint Disorder or TMJ Syndrome, is an umbrella term covering a variety of conditions associated with the inflammation of the Temporomandibular Joint, which connects the lower jaw to the skull. Dysfunction of this joint can cause significant pain and damage.
Correct diagnosis of TMJ can end your pain and discomfort
It is common for people with TMJ to have symptoms that they have attributed to other causes, or which simply confuse them. For example, symptoms of TMJ disorder can include:
Headaches (often misdiagnosed as migraines)
Shoulder, neck or back pain
Numbness in arms and fingers
Facial pain
Jaw pain
Clicking or popping jaw
Clenching or grinding teeth
Ringing ears (tinnitus)
Congested ears
It is particularly important for you to get a competent exam if you suspect that you have TMJ, so that you can begin treatment and relief right away.
TMJ diagnosis and treatment
If Dr. Zabek determines that you have a TMJD, he will work out a treatment plan to properly and comfortably align your jaw and teeth.
As part of your patient exam, Dr. Zabek will perform a thorough examination to determine if you are experiencing any misalignment of the jaw or teeth that is causing you difficulties.
If Dr. Zabek discovers a problem, he will begin treatment to relieve your TMJ.
Because TMJ is frequently caused by a bad bite, Dr. Zabek will first stabilize your bite. In many cases this can be done by using a customized bite guard, a temporary plastic device that fits over your teeth. Once the bite is stabilized, long-term management can begin.
There are many ways to keep your bite in proper alignment. Some permanent solutions may include; reshaping the enamel of the teeth, installing permanent bite guard devices, or installing reconstructive crowns. With more than 35 years of experience, Dr. Zabek can find the solution that is right for you.

Patient Testimonials
“Dr. Zabek has been my dentist for my entire adult life, nearly 30 years.
“When I first started seeing him my gums were bloody and my teeth were yellow. Now when I go in for my appointments they can't find anything to clean.
“Dr Z & his staff completely turned my dental health around, not only with their care in the office, but educating me about taking care of it myself and giving me the tools I need to keep it up.
“Thanks Dr. Z!” -- David P.
“Dr. Gregory Zabek has a great chairside manner, is very gentle, and has not hurt me once, through three crowns and numerous old filling replacements. Some of his jokes are corny, but that’s the way I like them! Even though I live in Berkeley, I come into the city for his ministrations, his intellect and his good humor. Great guy, I recommend him very highly!!” – Ben M.
