Are electric toothbrushes really better than traditional ones?
DOCTOR ZABEK: Most research says yes. In fact, Sonicare guarantee a better check-up with a money-back offer. However, just because it's electric doesn't mean it's better. You have to use them correctly, too. Mostly, they work well because they're easier to use, have timers, and do a lot of the work for you. And a lot of my patients think they are more fun to use than regular toothbrushes.
We always stock both regular and electric toothbrushes in our office. We recommend the Sonicare models of electric toothbrushes because the manufacturer's claims seem to be true, and they stand firmly behind their product. We even have replacement brush heads for the different models. We've tried other brands and they all appear beneficial, but we've clearly had great results with this brush.
Other brands you can consider include Oral B, Braun, Waterpik and Rotadent (sold only by dentists). However, if you don't have any gum problems, or you prefer to use a normal brush, we'll be happy to teach you how to use it to your best benefit.
